Sly but not shy
A new day brings the morning curse
I shield my eyes from the early rays
Cupping my forehead, rubbing my face
Last nights events are but a haze.
The booze flowed freely into my body
Like water in a river grand
Friends all around me, no one could harm me
I didn’t know what was at hand.
The bar grew quiet; all noise had stopped
Then entered a single man
He light up a cig, blew out some smoke
His skin colour was a dark tan.
His one gold hoop, hooked in his ear
Sparkled in the light from the stage
A thick black mustache and graying sideburns
Gave me a clue to his age.
“Georgio” he said with a fading smile
“It is I you must now follow.
You’ve slept with my daughter. You must be punished
Our laws overrule those you know.”
Standing up tall, I lifted my hand
“I am going nowhere with you”
He then touched my hand with the palm of his
Everything fast faded from view.
A healthy green forest in the dead of night
Surrounding a large gleaming glade
Speckled with caravans of all shapes and colours
Almost like a gypsy arcade.
“What do you want? I’ve done nothing wrong!
I’ve slept with no woman in a year!”
He watched as I spoke, others gathered around
For my life I soon started to fear.
Without a word he held up a knife
And plunged it deep into my chest
My eyes opened wide as I took my last breath
And fell to my place of final rest.
Still alive yet unable to move
They dressed me in their native clothes
Put on some rings, pierced my right ear
Filled my mouth with cloves.
Then a feast began, or maybe a dance?
All was a mix of blue yellow and red
I soon grew weary and closed my eyes
Assured I would soon be dead.
I awoke in my home, all alone
No scar marking my chest
No tall trees, no special glade
I feel the need for more rest.
Turning on my side, away from the sun
I feel a sting in my ear.
I reach up to feel what could be the cause
I find the answer quite queer.
A single golden hoop, like the old man wore
Had pierced the lobe of my ear
I felt a presence, warm, close and friendly
He and his family would always be near.
